Musselburgh took an early forward stranglehold on the game with a huge scrummage heave to gain an early penalty. David O'Hagan found touch. The lineout won, the ball was taken at pace by Paul Davis who burst through several despairing tackles for a fine solo try which was converted by Danny Owenson to take an early lead.
Musselburgh forwards were in control, starving the hosts' try-scoring back line of any useful ball. In one of the visitors' many early forward drives, they forced a penalty which was narrowly missed by Owenson. Further points were merely delayed as the Dunfermline scrum conceded another penalty and Owenson took full advantage.
Musselburgh's front five caused Dunfermline's pack all sorts of trouble, forcing yet another penalty resulting in another three points from Owenson's boot and a yellow card for Dunfermline No 8, Colin Eadie.
The visiting pack continued to trundle over the gain line and only desperate defence by Dunfermline prevented the scoreboard ticking on. The flow of play made further scoring inevitable and another powerful break by Davis was held up just short of the line. However, O'Hagan picked up the scraps by passing to Hickman, who plunged over for Muselburgh's second try. The conversion went wide.
O'Hagan's tactical kicking was also making a fine contribution to keeping his pack on the front foot and as Eadie re-entered the fray from the sin bin Musselburgh forced another penalty which Owenson missed narrowly before a short period of aerial ping pong ensued when the visitors forced another penalty. Dissent following the award of the penalty gave Musselburgh another 10 yards as the pack drove for the line, penning Dunfermline in their own 22 for some time before stand off Gregor McNeish cleared in desperation.
Dunfermline enjoyed their best period of the match in the early stages of the second half but drives for the line by Scott Swankie, Sky Laurie and Andy Warneford were all repelled by good defensive play by the visitors. Musselburgh extended their lead when Owenson burst through the home defence before releasing a pass to Andrew Cook who plunged over for the visitors' third try of the day, converted by Owenson.
It began to look as if Musselburgh would be denied the bonus point but in the last move of the game a huge rolling maul from the edge of the 22 produced the goods, pushing Robert Lovett over before O'Hagan converted for the final score.
Dunfermline travel to Langholmon Saturday (kick off 3pm) for the first of three away games.
