Conditions were ideal for a decent game of rugby.
What we got was a fairly turgid stop start match with very little scoring. Early YM pressure was held out and Dunfermline received a penalty to clear their lines. However YM were not to be denied and were awarded a penalty on the home side 22 metre line in six minutes. Ali Weir slotted the penalty goal to give YM a good start. Dunfermline dominated much of the possession and territory for the remainder of the half but were unable to capitalise against a determined defence. A rare foray by YM resulted in a series of 5 metre scrums to force Dunfermline into desperate defence but eventually the pressure told as YM’s Stuart Graham crossed for a try which was converted by Weir. Dunfermline were spurred on by this setback and a break by Josh Harris gained huge ground before the pass to supporting Scott Swankie went astray, failing to take advantage of a two to one overlap.
Dunfermline started the second half on the attack and were rewarded with a try by Andy Brown wide on the left as he squeezed in at the corner flag following good lead up work. The referee’s decision was called into question by the visitors but the try stood. The conversion was wide of the mark. The YM pack caused Dunfermline some problems in the scrummage but the home back row worked well to ensure a supply of usable possession. Dunfermline strived to add to their points tally and with good inter-passing between backs and forwards with Thomas Murray and Colin Eadie to the fore had the YM defence at sixes and sevens. Despite this the YM defence held firm as Dunfermline laid siege. Final score. Dunfermline 5 Hawick YM 10.
