Early Ellon pressure caught Dunfermline offside in front of the posts, Mark Ryan converted the penalty for the visitors. Dunfermline responded with enterprising play retaining possession well and winning a penalty on 30 metres which Gregor McNeish converted to level the score. The game was delayed for 10 minutes while Ellon centre Kyle Bayliss was treated and removed from the pitch with a suspected broken ankle. At the restart Dunfermline immediately went back on the attack and good interplay between Sky Laurie and Colin Eadie saw Laurie drive over for an unconverted try. Ellon pressed the Dunfermline line and won a series of penalties but opted for 5 metre scrums in an attempt to score tries. Dunfermline defence held out but again indiscipline resulted in a penalty in front of the posts for offside which Ryan converted. Dunfermline were stung into action and laid siege to the Ellon try line but despite retaining possession failed to add to their tally by half time.
Dunfermline began the second half in a dominant mood and Graeme Low went close in the left corner. Ellon cleared their lines with a penalty to touch. Indeed much of the Dunfermline efforts were foiled by booming clearances from stand off Mark Ryan, a well placed attacking kick from McNeish being returned with interest. Undismayed Dunfermline returned to the attack and a huge up and under from Scott Swankie was regathered by him and with the line opening up the last pass to Colin Eadie was judged forward. Shortly after Swankie made amends with a mazy run from near halfway, resulting in a try near the posts which McNeish converted. Although Dunfermline enjoyed the majority of possession by this time indiscipline in the loose allowed Ellon to repulse their advances. The script however began to run true as James Lawrie led a charge into Ellon territory only for the last pass again to be judged forward. Undeterred Dunfermline won a scrum against the head on the Ellon 22 metre line and a cross kick from McNeish was poorly dealt with by the visitors defence, allowing Josh Harris to touch down. To their credit Ellon fought to gain some consolation for their efforts and won a good touch close to the home line. They secured the ball from the resultant lineout with a catch and drive before moving the ball to scrum half Sam Mountain who crossed on the blind side. The conversion which would have earned the visitors a losing bonus point failed.
